Six people lost their lives on Tuesday morning following a multiple-vehicle crash involving a heavy-duty truck along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.
The fatal accident happened near the Old Toll Gate area in Ota, Ogun State,around 8:00 am, when a truck transporting vegetable oil reportedly lost control while in motion and rammed into other road users. Witnesses said the truck was on high speed before it veered off its lane and collided with a commercial minibus, a tricycle and pedestrians by the roadside.
According to Afolabi Odunsi,the Public Education Officer of the Ogun sector Command of the FRSC stated,
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck suffered mechanical brake failure. Six adults—five males and one female—were confirmed dead, while two adult males sustained varying degrees of injuries”.
Emergency responders who arrived at the scene confirmed that six victims — five men and one woman died on the spot due to the impact of the crash while others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.
Also, the deceased victims were evacuated to the Ifo General Hospital Mortuary.
Residents of the area described the incident as tragic and avoidable, noting that the stretch of road has recorded several similar accidents in the past due to speeding and poor vehicle maintenance.
Authorities have commenced an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Officials also warned commercial drivers and truck operators against reckless driving and the use of poorly maintained vehicles, stressing the need for strict adherence to road safety regulations.
The latest incident is one of too many on this major highway linking Lagos and neighboring states, where heavy traffic and commercial transportation remain high.
