The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan 1447AH.
The announcement came after reports confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon across Nigeria on Tuesday, the 29th day of Sha’aban.
In a press release signed by Professor Sambo Wali Junaid, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, the Sultan said: “The crescent moon was sighted in almost every part of the country earlier on Tuesday, which thereby signifies tomorrow, 18 February, as the first day of Ramadan 1447.”
He added: “The council got information of the moon sighting from many Islamic leaders across the country, which signifies the start of Ramadan fast on Wednesday.”
Call to the Faithful
The Sultan directed Muslim communities nationwide to commence fasting in line with Islamic teachings. He encouraged the faithful to use the holy month to pray for peace and stability in Nigeria.
He also urged prayers for the nation’s leaders and divine intervention in tackling insecurity affecting parts of the country.
The declaration aligns with global Islamic practice, where Ramadan begins after the confirmed sighting of the crescent moon.
It is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. Interestingly, in 2026, its start coincides closely with the Christian season of Lent, which also emphasizes fasting, sacrifice, and spiritual renewal.
Both traditions encourage self-discipline, charity, and devotion, offering a shared period of reflection across Nigeria’s diverse religious communities.
