Air Crash Averted: Arik Flight Diverts Mid-Air to Benin After Engine Failure

Thankfully, passengers on an Arik Air Boeing 737 escaped unharmed on Wednesday after the aircraft experienced an in‑flight engine anomaly and diverted to Benin Airport.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji.

She said the crew detected abnormal indications on one of the engines during the cruise phase of the Lagos–Port Harcourt flight.

“Following standard safety procedures, the crew conducted a precautionary engine shutdown and diverted to the nearest suitable airport,” Oladeji explained.

The aircraft, registration number 5N‑MJF, landed safely in Benin. All 50 passengers and five crew members disembarked without injury.

Preliminary observations at Benin Airport suggest significant damage to the affected engine. NSIB officials said an initial visual inspection revealed the severity of the fault.

In line with international standards under ICAO Annex 13, the Bureau has launched a formal investigation.

A preliminary assessment team is en route to secure the aircraft, document evidence, interview crew and witnesses, and recover flight data and cockpit voice recorder information.

Investigation Process

The NSIB said it is working closely with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Arik Air, and other stakeholders to determine the sequence of events and contributing factors.

A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, while a final report will be published at the conclusion of the investigation.

“The safety of passengers, crew, and the public remains our highest priority,” Oladeji stated.

She encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact the Bureau through official channels.

Firstly my thanks goes to God Almighty who gave the pilot the sence of noticing what was going on the idea of landing to the nearest airport.
Secondly, the NSIB also did a very crucial investigation.
