Tragedy struck in Lagos on Monday evening when two boats collided and capsized in Imore Lagoon around 7:00 pm, resulting in the loss of at least 20 lives.

The boats, each carrying 16 passengers each, were unregistered and their routes and destinations remain unclear.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, a police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and reported that 11 passengers were rescued thanks to the combined efforts of local divers, police, and emergency personnel.

Rescue Efforts and Casualties

The rescued passengers, who suffered injuries, were rushed to the Naval Town Hospital in Ojo for medical attention. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing for the remaining casualties.

An accident report has been filed at the Ilashe Police Division. Unfortunately, attempts to reach the reach the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), for further information have been unsuccessful.

It’s worth noting that this incident is not isolated, as boat mishaps have occurred in Lagos recently. For instance, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) reported another boat mishap in Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Monday night, resulting in three casualties.
