Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has rejected calls by civil society groups for the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, describing the move as a failed attempt by former Governor Gboyega Oyetola and his allies to destabilize Osun State
In a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said the call was part of a plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to seize power through the backdoor after failing to win the support of the people.
“We reiterate well-known facts in public domain that the APC is the main source of disturbance in the state, paralysing local government, mismanaging LG fund, and illegally deploying police, making Mr Oyetola and his cohorts the most hated entities in Osun political space,” Adeleke declared.
He accused the APC of seizing local government funds, mismanaging them, and forcefully occupying councils to provoke violence.
According to him, the strategy was designed to create chaos and blame his administration.
Adeleke insisted that despite open confrontation and illegality, his government has maintained peace. He described the emergency call as “an act of frustration and desperation.”
Allegations Against APC
The statement questioned how Adeleke could be blamed for the crisis when, according to him, APC chairmen illegally hijacked local governments and refused to vacate office after their tenure expired.
“How can Governor Adeleke be responsible for the impunity of seeking tenure elongation by these illegal chairmen while staying on illegally across the councils?” the statement asked.
He further alleged that the APC hijacked local government funds at a commercial bank in violation of finance laws.
Adeleke said his administration has been using state funds to pay local workers abandoned by the APC chairmen.
He warned that no individual or group would be allowed to disturb the peace of Osun. “Anybody found creating public mayhem will face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
He also revealed he had directed the Commissioner of Police to monitor and stop any plot to plunge the state into conflict. He also called on the Inspector General of Police to take note of the trend and deploy officers accordingly.
The governor urged President Bola Tinubu to call Oyetola to order, saying: “Those seeking power should face the electorates; voters will decide. Political power is secured through the people; no backdoor access will work.”
