Peter Obi Advise Tinubu to Sit-At-Home and Address Nigeria’s Challenges

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his frequent foreign trips, urging him to focus on solving Nigeria’s pressing challenges, particularly the country’s persistent electricity crisis.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Obi recalled Tinubu’s 2022 campaign pledge:

“If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term.”

Obi lamented that the National Electricity Grid has already collapsed twice in January 2026, with the month not yet over. He added that the grid collapsed about 12 times in 2025, ruling out the chances of achieving steady electricity.

“This reality sharply contradicts the promise and should worry every patriotic Nigerian,” Obi wrote.

Obi expressed concern that Tinubu is currently on another foreign trip, this time to Turkey, a country of about 87 million people that generates and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity. Nigeria, by contrast, struggles with less than 5% of that capacity.

“The contrast is both striking and painful,” Obi noted, adding that Nigeria’s leadership should prioritise governance over travel.

He warned that at this rate, Nigerians may soon hear of trips to far-flung places like Palau or Vanuatu, while critical issues at home remain unattended.

Obi urged Nigerians to demand accountability and responsible leadership, stressing that the country’s collective focus should be on good governance rather than the 2027 elections.

“We should be joining hands to demand accountability and responsible leadership, and to save Nigerians from the indignity and suffering caused by persistent bad governance,” he said.
