Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has taken aim at President Bola Tinubu over Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges, recalling a campaign promise Tinubu made during the 2022 election period.
In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi quoted Tinubu as saying: “If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term.”
Obi noted that despite this pledge, Nigeria’s national grid has already collapsed twice in January 2026, with the month yet to end. He added that the grid reportedly collapsed 12 times in 2025, describing the situation as troubling and contradictory to the President’s promise.
The former presidential candidate compared Nigeria’s electricity generation to that of Turkey, which he said has a population of about 87 million but generates and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity. Nigeria, he lamented, continues to struggle with less than 5% of that capacity.
Call for Leadership at Home
Obi also expressed concern over Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips, urging him to remain in the country and directly tackle Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
“Our appeal is simple: stay at home and confront the nation’s problems,” Obi wrote, warning that unresolved governance failures continue to inflict hardship and indignity on Nigerians.
He further lamented what he described as Nigeria’s growing obsession with elections rather than governance, calling on citizens to demand accountability and responsible leadership.
Obi concluded his post with a message of optimism: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
