Former Anambra LP Governorship Candidate George Moghalu Quits

The Labour Party (LP) has lost one of its prominent figures in Anambra State as Dr. George N. Moghalu, the party’s governorship candidate in last year’s off-cycle election, has formally resigned his membership.

Moghalu, who previously served as Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), announced his departure in a letter dated January 26, 2026, addressed to the party chairman in his ward, Uruagu, Nnewi.

In the letter, Moghalu wrote: “I bring you the good wishes of my family and to formally inform you of my resignation from the Labour Party effective today, the 26th of January, 2026.”

He expressed gratitude to the party leadership at the grassroots, state, and national levels for giving him the platform to contest the November 2025 Anambra governorship election.

“Let me also thank the party through you for providing me the opportunity to use the Labour Party platform to contest the last governorship election of our state. Please, accept as always, the assurance of my sincere regards and kindly convey the same to the members,” the letter concluded.

Political Background

Moghalu is not new to Nigeria’s political scene. He previously held the position of National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress (APC) before joining the Labour Party to pursue his governorship ambition.

His move to LP was seen as a strategic attempt to leverage the party’s growing influence in Anambra, especially among younger voters. However, his resignation now raises questions about his next political direction.

The Labour Party leadership in Anambra has yet to issue an official response to Moghalu’s exit. His departure comes at a time when the party is working to consolidate its base ahead of future elections.

Observers note that Moghalu’s resignation could affect the party’s grassroots strength in Nnewi and surrounding areas, where he commands significant influence.
