Enugu State Earmarks 2026 Budget of ₦1.62tn, Second Highest in Nigeria

Enugu State has joined Nigeria’s trillion-naira budget league as Governor Peter Mbah on Tuesday laid before the House of Assembly a ₦1.62 trillion spending plan for the 2026 fiscal year.

The figure, which represents a 66.5 percent increase over the 2025 appropriation, is the largest in the state’s history and places Enugu second only to Lagos in Nigeria’s budget scale as at today.

Presenting the proposal, Mbah described 2026 as the year Enugu would move from laying foundations to scaling transformation across all sectors.

He noted that the state had already achieved 83 percent implementation of the ₦971 billion budget approved for 2025, a performance he said demonstrated fiscal discipline and capacity to deliver on ambitious targets.

Revenue Breakdown

The revenue framework projects ₦870 billion from internally generated sources, ₦387 billion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee, and ₦329 billion from capital receipts.

With this, the government intends to sustain a capital-heavy structure, allocating 80 percent of the budget to development projects and 20 percent to recurrent expenditure.

Education remains the single largest beneficiary, taking more than 30 percent of the total outlay for the second consecutive year.

Housing is earmarked for over 15 percent, while health receives 10 percent. Infrastructure spending is set to expand dramatically, with more than 1,000 roads scheduled for construction or rehabilitation.

In transportation, the state plans to add 14 aircraft to the Enugu Air fleet, underscoring its ambition to position itself as a regional hub.

Tagged the “Budget of Renewed Momentum,” Mbah acknowledged the proposal’s ambitious scale but insisted it was responsible and achievable.

He argued that the combination of strong revenue mobilization, disciplined execution, and strategic investment would enable Enugu to accelerate growth and consolidate its place among Nigeria’s leading subnational economies.
