Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has formally resigned his membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing the crisis rocking the party’s national leadership.
His resignation, contained in a letter dated November 4, 2025, and just made public on Monday, was addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde in Ede North Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke confirmed he had stepped away from the party weeks earlier.
He later reiterated the decision in a post on X, thanking the PDP for the opportunity to serve as both a Senator and Governor under its platform.
Barely 12 hours after Adeleke’s exit became public, Osun PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi announced that the governorship primary would not hold as scheduled, citing confusion caused by the suspension and counter‑suspension of key national officers.
He suggested Adeleke might no longer be interested in seeking the party’s ticket for the 2026 governorship election unless the crisis was resolved in line with INEC requirements.
However, the PDP national secretariat countered this position. In a letter dated December 1, 2025, National Organizing Secretary Hon. Theophilus Shan insisted the primary would proceed as planned.
He confirmed that congresses to elect delegates had been successfully concluded in late November and that the primary was fixed for December 2 at Atlantis Multipurpose Hall, Ring Road, Osogbo, starting at 10 a.m.
Security Concerns Over Venue
Despite the national directive, security concerns have cast doubt on the venue. A top security source disclosed that threats had been issued against the hall’s owner and manager, warning them not to allow the primary to hold there.
It is suggested the venue might be changed but assured that security agencies were monitoring the situation.
A party insider confirmed that while the primary would go ahead, the location had been altered for safety reasons. “Security is guaranteed for all the delegates,” an insider reportedly said.
Abiodun, one of the organizers, added: “The state chapter of PDP is threatening us, but we won’t panic. We are going to hold the primary no matter the threat.”
Adeleke’s resignation – as a seating governor is a significant development in this Osun’s gubernatorial election. It is not clear in which political party the incumbent governor will now contest for his reelection.
Mr. Adeleke had reportedly been snubbed by the federal ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) where some of his bitter political rivals are already holding sway.
There are reports that the governor might be heading next to the Accord Party or any of the less popular parties.
