The Headquarters Theatre Command, Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has confirmed the arrest of five individuals following the unauthorized discharge of firearms that killed a 15‑year‑old girl in Maiduguri.

The incident occurred on April 4, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m. in the Ngomari area during a wedding celebration at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Teachers Staff Quarters.

“Troops have taken decisive action following the incident involving the unauthorised discharge of firearms in Borno State, which tragically resulted in the loss of an innocent life,” Lt. Col. Sani Uba said in a statement Monday.

Details of the Arrest

According to OPHK, the suspects were traced and apprehended after vigilantes attached to a Local Government chairman’s escort team fired sporadically into the air.

“In the Ngomari general area, troops of Operation HADIN KAI, in conjunction with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), have arrested five suspects linked to the unlawful use of firearms during a social event,” Uba explained.

The suspects were identified as Muhammad Husaini (28), Abba Jiddu (25), Abba Kolo Mohammed (20), Ali Adam (20), and Nura Mohammed (18). They remain in custody pending prosecution.

“The Theatre Command strongly condemns the act, describing it as highly unprofessional, unauthorised, and a clear violation of established regulations governing the handling and use of firearms,” the statement added.

Investigation And Accountability

Authorities confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway in collaboration with the Borno State Government’s security office.

“It reiterates that the Civilian Joint Task Force operates strictly as a support group and is not permitted to engage in indiscriminate use of firearms under any circumstances, particularly within civilian environments,” Uba stressed.

The Theatre Command assured residents that the overall security situation remains calm, with heightened vigilance to prevent further incidents.

“The Theatre Command extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of civilians,” Uba concluded.

The Maiduguri tragedy has renewed concerns about firearm regulation and the role of vigilante groups in Nigeria’s security architecture.
