At least 84 people have been killed in a brutal attack on Mafa community, Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The Yobe State Government on Wednesday held a mass burial for the victims in Babangida, the local council headquarters. Families wept as bodies were lowered into the ground.

Police said the attack was carried out by about 150 suspected Boko Haram fighters. They stormed the community on more than 50 motorcycles, armed with rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

“The attack led to widespread destruction, with shops and houses set ablaze, forcing nearly all villagers to flee to Babangida,” Police Public Relations Officer, Dungus Abdulkarim, said.

The invaders destroyed markets, homes, and food stores. Survivors described a night of terror, with gunfire echoing as people ran into the bush.

Abdulkarim confirmed that residents had since returned to Mafa and that no further attacks had been reported. Still, the scale of the destruction has left many speechless and without shelter.

This assault ranks among the deadliest in Yobe in recent years.
