Rabi Laxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Nepalese prime minister Jhalanath Khanal, has died after protesters set fire to the couple’s Kathmandu home.
The attack happened Tuesday in the Dallu area of the capital. Witnesses said demonstrators trapped her inside before setting the house ablaze. She was rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital but later died of severe injuries.
Her death underscores the spiralling violence in Nepal as youth-led protests entered a second day. Demonstrators accuse politicians of corruption, nepotism, and mismanaging an economy already strained by inflation and unemployment.
According to authorities, at least 22 people have been killed and more than 300 injured since unrest erupted Monday.
Political Residences Under Siege
International rights groups condemned the crackdown. Amnesty International said police fired live rounds at protesters. Videos online also showed petrol bombs hurled at the homes of former prime ministers K.P. Sharma Oli and Sher Bahadur Deuba, as well as Maoist Centre chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
Government landmarks like Singh Durbar, Nepal’s central administrative complex, and Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence, were also attacked.
The unrest follows years of frustration over stalled development and alleged misuse of public funds. Nepal’s fragile democracy has faced repeated leadership changes since the end of its decade-long civil war in 2006.
Amid mounting pressure, 73-year-old Oli resigned Tuesday in a letter to the president. He said the step was necessary to “take further steps towards a political solution.”
Several ministers, including those for water supply, agriculture, and home affairs, also resigned in protest against the government’s handling of the crisis.
