Nepal is facing one of its most turbulent moments in recent years. Protests led by young people have exploded into violent unrest across the Himalayan nation.
A shocking viral video captured Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel being chased, kicked, and beaten by furious demonstrators. The minister fell to the ground before scrambling to his feet and fleeing from the angry mob.
The protests began after the government briefly banned 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and X. Though the ban has been lifted, the demonstrations have widened into broader anger at corruption, nepotism, and broken promises.
So far, 19 people have died and more than 300 have been injured. Protesters, largely drawn from Nepal’s restless Gen Z, say they will not back down until reforms take shape.
“This is not just about social media anymore. It is about the future we were promised but never given,” one protester declared in Kathmandu.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday in the face of unrelenting pressure. Yet, his exit has not calmed the storm. Demonstrators continue to demand sweeping political change and accountability from leaders.
International observers warn that the unrest could further destabilise Nepal’s fragile democracy. Already struggling with unemployment and inflation, the country now faces political paralysis that could delay key reforms.
