Nottingham Forest have sacked head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, citing a breakdown in relations with club owner Evangelos Marinakis.
Appointed in December 2023, Nuno guided Forest through a tense relegation battle in his first season. He then delivered a remarkable turnaround in 2024โ25, leading the club to seventh in the Premier League โ their best finish in 30 years.
That success secured Europa League football for the first time since 1996. In June, he was rewarded with a new contract until 2028.
Despite the achievements, cracks soon appeared. Nuno admitted that his relationship with Marinakis โhad broken downโ and repeatedly criticised the clubโs transfer dealings.
He described the squad as โunbalancedโ and warned it was โvery, very farโ from being ready for the new season.
Breakdown With Marinakis
Tensions escalated after a draw with Leicester City, when Marinakis appeared to confront Nuno on the pitch. The club later denied it was a confrontation, but the image fuelled speculation.
Recent poor results, including a 3โ0 home loss to West Ham, deepened frustration. Nunoโs sacking makes him the first Premier League manager dismissed this season.
In a statement, Forest said: โAs someone who played a pivotal role in our success last season, he will always hold a special place in our journey.โ
The club must now prepare for a Europa League campaign and a tough Premier League clash with Arsenal. Potential successors include Ange Postecoglou, Marco Silva, Oliver Glasner, Brendan Rodgers, and Mauricio Pochettino.
