Taiwo Awoniyi Undergoes Emergency Surgery After Collision in Nottingham Forest Match

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery on an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s English Premier League match against Leicester City.

The Nigerian international collided with the goalpost while attempting to convert a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga.

Awoniyi stretched to reach the ball but missed, crashing into the post. He received medical attention on the field and attempted to continue playing.

However, the full extent of his injury was only discovered by Nottingham Forest’s medical staff on Monday. Reports confirmed he was immediately taken for surgery, which was not life-threatening.

The club released an official statement on their X handle: “The Club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City.”

They added, “Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The Club will provide further updates when appropriate.”

Marinakis’ Reaction and Forest’s Champions League Hopes

The incident led to a dramatic confrontation between Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

Marinakis stormed onto the pitch after the final whistle, visibly frustrated that Awoniyi was left on the field despite his injury. He questioned why Nuno consulted with medical staff but did not substitute the player.

Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Leicester was a setback for Nottingham Forest’s Champions League ambitions. The club, currently in seventh place, is now one point outside the Premier League’s top five, which guarantees Champions League qualification.

With only two matches remaining against West Ham and Chelsea, Forest’s fate is no longer in their hands.

Despite the disappointment, Forest is assured of a place in the UEFA Conference League, marking their first return to European competition since the 1995-96 season.
