Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has hailed Taraba’s Greenhouse Project, saying it will boost food security across the North East.
Zulum made the remarks in Jalingo while commissioning the remodelled facility during the North East Governors’ Forum summit.
At the gathering, governors warned that Nigeria could face food shortages in 2026 if urgent steps are not taken.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recently warned that 30.6 million Nigerians may suffer acute food and nutrition insecurity in the coming months.
The report stressed that the North East could bear the heaviest burden, with fragile communities at risk of widespread hunger.
Taraba’s Greenhouse project has been presented as part of the solution. In July 2025, it recorded its first major harvest of green peppers and cucumbers.
The farm uses a soil-less farming method, relying on compost-based cultivation instead of traditional soil.
A New Agricultural Model
Speaking on the project, Zulum described the commissioning as a bold step toward agricultural transformation.
Taraba’s Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications, Emmanuel Bello, quoted the governor as saying the facility represented a new model for farming in Nigeria.
“Governor Agbu Kefas led the other five governors to commission the remodelled Green House Farm. The locals call it the Cucumber Farm, but it is actually one of the best greenhouses in the country,” Bello wrote.
He explained that the greenhouse uses advanced technology that allows vegetables to be cultivated year-round, regardless of weather.
“Apart from the famous green pepper, the world-class tomatoes here are clearly the best in the market. Healthy, fleshy, and nutritious, experts say, Taraba State has invariably become the headquarters of vegetables in the country.”
From Collapse to Revival
The project is run in partnership with Israeli experts Ohad Shtilman and Eyal Tal, alongside a technical team from TSI.
They are determined to avoid mistakes of the past after the farm once collapsed. “They are thus determined to deal with all the loopholes and run a successful enterprise,” Bello added.
Already, demand is rising. Buyers and sellers are lining up, while investors are showing renewed interest in the profitable venture.
Other governors present at the event included Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), and Mai Mala Buni (Yobe).
