Germany Shocked by Slovakia 2-0 in World Cup Qualifier Loss

Germany suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat to Slovakia in Bratislava’s Tehelne Pole Stadium on September 4, 2025.

It was Germany’s first-ever away loss in a World Cup qualifier, and it extends their competitive losing streak to three matches, after falling to Portugal and France in the Nations League.

Ranked 52nd in the world, Slovakia were underdogs but capitalised on Germany’s errors. Dávid Hancko struck just before halftime after Florian Wirtz’s costly turnover.

Ten minutes into the second half, David Strelec sealed the upset with a dazzling solo effort that curled past Oliver Baumann.

Despite controlling about 70% of possession and firing 14 shots compared to Slovakia’s 8, Germany lacked the cutting edge to penetrate a resolute Slovak defence.

Nagelsmann and Kimmich Voice Concerns

Coach Julian Nagelsmann was blunt: “We did not show any emotionality in our game today. In terms of emotions the opponents were miles ahead of us… maybe we have to put less importance on quality and more on players who will give it all out there.”

Midfielder Joshua Kimmich echoed the frustration, blaming attitude over tactics. He demanded courage and unity to arrest Germany’s alarming slump.

Highlights of the match

Germany now sit third in Group A with zero points. Slovakia and Northern Ireland lead with three points each after their opening wins. Only the group winner secures automatic qualification to the 2026 World Cup.

Can Germany recover from this historic defeat and steady their path, or are deeper problems threatening their journey to the finals?
