Gunmen Demand ₦600m Ransom After Abducting Family in Katsina

Anxiety in Katsina State after gunmen kidnapped a family of three in Katsina metropolis and is now demanding a whooping ₦600m ransom for their release.

The victims, identified as 33-year-old Anas Ahmadu, his wife, Halimat, and their daughter, Jidda, were taken away during an early morning attack on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

The incident happened at their residence in Filin Canada Quarters, Sabuwar Unguwa area of the city.

During the assault, a vigilante, Abdullahi Muhammad, 25, who attempted to stop the gunmen, was shot dead on the spot. The attackers escaped before police operatives arrived.

A family source confirmed that the abductors contacted Anas’ uncle using his phone. “They demanded ₦600m, but we told them the family cannot afford such an amount,” the source said.

The situation has left residents in fear, as kidnappings for ransom have continued to plague Katsina and other parts of Nigeria’s North-West.

Police Respond With Rescue Operation

The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the attack. Spokesperson DSP Abubakar Sadiq said: “On Tuesday, August 26, at about 0300 hrs, some suspected gunmen armed with weapons attacked the residence of one Anas Ahmadu, kidnapping him, his wife, and daughter, one Jidda Anas.”

He added: “The hoodlums fatally shot one Abdullahi Muhammad, 25, a member of the local vigilante, and escaped before the arrival of police operatives.”

According to him, Commissioner of Police Bello Shehu immediately visited the scene with senior officers, deploying extra personnel and anti-kidnapping units. “We will ensure the prompt rescue of the victims and the arrest of the perpetrators,” he assured.

The command urged residents to share any useful information in confidence. “We further call on anyone with useful information to come forward and assist the ongoing investigation. All information given will be treated with the utmost confidentiality,” Sadiq added.
