Atlético Madrid Stumble Again as Elche Hold Them to 1–1 Draw

Atlético Madrid’s search for a first win of the new La Liga season continued as they were held to a frustrating 1–1 draw by newly promoted Elche at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Alexander Sørloth’s early strike looked set to settle nerves, but Rafa Mir quickly equalized, and a disciplined Elche rearguard held firm to secure a precious point.

This was Elche’s first goal at Atlético’s home ground in over five decades. The last time they scored there was in 1968.

The result is Elche’s second consecutive draw since returning to the top flight, a promising start for a team many had tipped for relegation.

Bright Start, Sudden Setback

In front of 67,152 fans, Atlético showed plenty of intent but again struggled to convert dominance into goals. With just one point from their opening two games, Diego Simeone’s men already face questions over consistency and attacking sharpness.

The hosts started brightly and broke through in the eighth minute. Dávid Hancko’s perfectly weighted pass released Sørloth, who drilled low past Matías Dituro. The Metropolitano erupted, eager to see a response after the opening-day defeat to Espanyol.

But Atlético’s momentum evaporated within seven minutes. A sharp ball from Pedro Bigas sliced open the defense, and Rafa Mir coolly slotted past Jan Oblak to notch Elche’s historic goal. “It’s a moment I’ll never forget,” Mir said after the match.

From there, Elche executed their plan superbly. Sitting deep in a compact 4-4-2, they closed space and frustrated Atlético, whose first-half push yielded few clear chances.

By halftime, the game had settled into a tactical stalemate. Elche picked up two yellow cards for tactical fouls but otherwise coped well.

Simeone’s Changes Fall Short

The second half brought more Atlético pressure but little end product. Simeone turned to his bench, introducing Antoine Griezmann, Conor Gallagher, and Giacomo Raspadori in a triple change. He later added reinforcements in the fullback positions.

Even so, the hosts managed only three efforts on target from 10 attempts. Dituro stood tall whenever tested. Elche, meanwhile, nearly stole the points on the counter. Germán Valera and Álvaro Rodríguez both forced saves from Oblak.

Atlético de Madrid vs. Elche – Game Highlights

Elche manager Daniel Farke hailed his team’s resilience, calling the draw “a huge achievement.” Rafa Mir dedicated his goal to the club’s traveling supporters, saying “they gave us strength.”

The result means Atlético’s winless run stretches into a second game. Pressure is mounting ahead of next weekend’s trip to Celta Vigo. Elche, buoyed by a point at one of Spain’s toughest venues, host Real Betis next as they aim to extend their encouraging start.
