Bayern Edge Stuttgart 2-1 to Win First Franz Beckenbauer Supercup

Bayern Munich lifted their first trophy of the new season with a 2-1 win over VfB Stuttgart in the newly renamed Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.

The match, played at the MHPArena in Stuttgart, honored the late German football icon who passed away in 2024.

Goals from Harry Kane and debutant Luis Díaz sealed the win for the Bundesliga champions, despite a late scare from the hosts.

Bayern struck early in the 18th minute. Harry Kane pounced on a defensive error by Luca Jaquez and calmly slotted past Fabian Bredlow, who replaced the injured Alexander Nübel in goal.

The finish was Kane’s 97th goal in 98 appearances for Bayern, continuing his blistering form since arriving from Tottenham last season.

The second goal came in the 77th minute. Luis Díaz, signed from Liverpool for €60 million, made an instant impact on his competitive debut. He rose to meet Serge Gnabry’s cross and powered a header into the net.

Díaz celebrated by mimicking Diogo Jota’s video-game pose, a tribute to his former teammate who tragically died in a car accident in July.

Stuttgart didn’t give up. In stoppage time, Jamie Leweling headed in from close range after a scramble in the box. But Bayern held firm to secure the win.

Neuer Shines, Stats Show Bayern’s Control

Bayern dominated possession with 61%, completed 520 passes, and registered 14 shots—six on target. Stuttgart managed 341 passes and just four shots on target.

Manuel Neuer, making his 11th Supercup appearance, was voted Man of the Match. He made three crucial saves, including a reflex stop from Nick Woltemade, who remains a transfer target for Bayern.

Kane had four shots, three on target. Díaz scored from his only attempt. Michael Olise also impressed, linking up well with Kane and creating multiple chances.

After the match, Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich praised the team’s effort. “We had some luck in the first half, but we stayed organized and took our chances. It’s a great feeling to win the first Supercup under Franz Beckenbauer’s name,” he said.

This win marks Bayern’s 11th Supercup title—a competition record. It also gives Vincent Kompany his second trophy as Bayern manager, following last season’s Bundesliga triumph.

For Stuttgart, the performance showed promise. Coach Sebastian Hoeneß, overseeing his 100th game in charge, saw his team fight hard but fall short due to defensive lapses.

With the Bundesliga season kicking off next weekend, Bayern will host RB Leipzig, while Stuttgart travel to face Union Berlin.

But the question is if Bayern can carry this momentum into the Bundesliga season? Let us know what you think.
