The Super Falcons of Nigeria have advanced to the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a tense and tactical 2–1 victory over South Africa in Tuesday’s semi-final clash held in Casablanca, Morocco.
The first half was largely controlled by the Falcons, who looked composed in midfield and created chances down the flanks.
Their dominance paid off when winger Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty in the 41st minute after a South African defender handled the ball in the box. The goal gave Nigeria a deserved lead going into halftime.
South Africa, however, fought back in the second half and were rewarded with a penalty of their own in the 66th minute.
Midfielder Linda Motlhalo stepped up and buried the equaliser, briefly silencing the Nigerian supporters in the stands. The Banyana Banyana side began pressing harder, searching for a second goal, but Nigeria remained composed.

Just as extra time loomed, fullback Michelle Alozie produced a moment of brilliance, unleashing a thunderous strike from outside the area in the 90+2 minute that beat the South African goalkeeper and sealed the win.
The late goal sent the Nigerian bench and fans into a frenzy, with the Falcons holding on to secure their place in the final.

The match highlighted Nigeria’s balance of experience and youth, with players like Asisat Oshoala, Ajibade, and Alozie stepping up at critical moments.
Head coach Justine Madugu praised his team’s mentality and discipline, calling the win “a reflection of the work done since the start of the tournament.”
The Falcons will now look to claim a record-extending 10th WAFCON title in the upcoming final with Morocco on Saturday, July 26, while South Africa will battle for third place against Ghana.
The victory also extends Nigeria’s unbeaten run in the tournament and reaffirms their status as continental powerhouses in women’s football.
