Taiwo Awoniyi Back on His Feet, As Uche Eyes Premier League Switch

Taiwo Awoniyi, the Nigerian striker who nearly lost his life in May, has returned to full training after a terrifying health ordeal.

The Nottingham Forest forward had suffered a ruptured intestine, an injury that required two separate surgeries. During one of the procedures, doctors placed him in an induced coma.

According to reports at the time, the injury was so serious it had cast doubts on whether Awoniyi would play football again. But now, against the odds, he is back.

The Super Eagles confirmed the news in a brief but cheerful post on X: “Taiwo Awoniyi returns to full training after that serious abdominal injury in May. Great to see him back on the grass.”

His return is good news not just for his club but for the national team as well. Nigeria will soon resume international fixtures, and a fully fit Awoniyi is a huge boost.

Fans have praised his grit and resilience online. Many feared the worst in May, but the 27-year-old has fought his way back. This comeback story has warmed the hearts of supporters across Nigeria.

Uche Pushes for England Move as Transfer Tension Builds

While Awoniyi is making his way back to football, another Nigerian, Christantus Uche, is making waves in the transfer market.

The 22-year-old midfielder has missed several Getafe training sessions. Officially, the club says the absence was authorised. Unofficially, Uche is pushing for a move.

He reportedly wants to join the Premier League. Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Brighton & Hove Albion have all shown interest. So far, no bids have been made public.

During the unveiling of Getafe’s new jersey, club president Ángel Torres said: “Uche doesn’t even know what he wants. He has offers from Serie A but he wants to leave only if he goes to the Premier League. I don’t know why.”

“This week we will meet with him and see him,” he added.

Getafe are not willing to let him go easily. Uche’s contract contains a €25 million release clause, which becomes active on January 1, 2025. Until then, the club has the final say.

His former club, AD Ceuta, also have a stake in the matter. The lower-division Spanish side is entitled to between 12% and 20% of any profit Getafe makes on Uche’s eventual sale.

Spanish sports daily AS reported that the midfielder’s current market value is rising. Marca added that the interested Premier League clubs may be ready to offer close to €20 million.

“He has a €25m release clause, which is affordable for the English clubs,” Marca said.

Uche joined Getafe in February 2024 and has grown in prominence quickly. With just months at the top level, he is already being compared to other creative talents like Brenden Aaronson.
