Former Senate President David Mark has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending decades of active membership and loyalty.
Mark, a founding figure in the PDP, cited deepening internal strife and unresolved leadership rifts as reasons for his departure.
“Recent events marked by deepening divisions, persistent leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences have reduced the party to a shadow of its former self,” he said in a letter dated June 27.
He accused the party of failing to redeem its public image and restore discipline, despite efforts at reconciliation.
“I pledged to remain the last man standing… I have worked steadfastly to rebuild, reconcile, and reposition the party,” he said. But he concluded, “I have resolved to join the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria.”
Mark’s departure signals a major shift in opposition dynamics, especially as Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 elections.
ADC Emerges as Unified Opposition Platform for 2027
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has now become the chosen platform for a coalition of opposition parties seeking to dislodge the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Top figures like David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola have joined the ADC’s interim leadership.
Mark now serves as Interim National Chairman, while Aregbesola was named Interim National Secretary.
Other appointees include Chief Anayo Arinze (Deputy Chairman South), Alhaji Ibrahim Manzo (Deputy Chairman North), and Bolaji Abdullahi (National Publicity Secretary).
According to insiders, the ADC was selected due to its nationwide structure, lack of internal crises, and a strong grassroots presence.
“This is a strategic move to unite the opposition and present a strong front against the APC,” a source familiar with the talks said.
The party is expected to organise outreach efforts, restructure leadership, and hold a national convention in 2026 to elect a permanent working committee.
Former chairman Ralph Okey Nwosu has stepped aside for the restructuring. He is likely to take up the role of Interim Organising Secretary.
The ADC’s adoption also came after concerns over alleged delays by INEC in registering new parties, including the proposed All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

With inflation soaring and insecurity persisting, many Nigerians have grown weary of the current administration.
The opposition coalition, under the ADC, seeks to capitalise on this growing discontent by presenting a unified and credible alternative.
The new leadership, which includes familiar names from the PDP, APC, and Labour Party, aims to build support across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
There is growing hope among the coalition that this effort could reshape Nigeria’s political space ahead of the next general election.
Whether this new movement will hold together long enough to mount a serious challenge remains the question that 2027 will answer.
