The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a strong security warning to American citizens living in or visiting Abuja.
The advisory recommends they avoid Nigerian military bases and government buildings due to rising global tensions and growing concerns over possible threats.
The advisory, released on Monday, comes under the banner “Emergency Information for American Citizens.” It warns that the current international security climate has made certain areas in the Nigerian capital more risky for American nationals.
In response, all US Embassy personnel and their families have been barred from making any non-official visits to military or government facilities in Abuja.
“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time,” the Embassy stated.
Embassy Cites Growing Security Worries but Gives No Specific Threat
While the embassy did not disclose the nature of the threats, the advisory reflects unease over the safety of US citizens in Nigeria.
Officials believe that military and government sites could be targeted. These locations are often linked to Western interests and may attract hostile attention in the current global climate.
US citizens have been advised to increase their level of personal security. The embassy urged them to stay alert in public spaces and limit visits to places commonly frequented by expatriates, diplomats, and government officials.
Large crowds and non-essential trips should also be avoided.
Citizens are encouraged to reduce predictability in their daily activities. For example, they are told not to follow regular commuting routes or schedules.
The embassy also recommends checking buildings for emergency exits when entering, and reviewing personal safety procedures frequently.
Mission Operations Continue Despite Warning
Although the security risk appears serious, the United States Embassy in Abuja is still open. Its consulate in Lagos is also fully operational.
There are currently no changes to services provided to US nationals in Nigeria. However, the embassy has advised Americans to stay informed and check the US Mission Nigeria’s official website for fresh updates.
This new security message comes as global tensions continue to rise due to multiple conflicts and threats across several regions.
It has been suggested that all diplomatic facilities worldwide are being placed under higher alert to prepare for any unexpected eventualities.
