United States intelligence through its embassy in Abuja has warned of the risk of terror attacks in Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja.
It warned that possible targets include “government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organizations,” and said the embassy will offer “reduced services until further notice“.
The embassy advised her citizens to avoid “non-essential travels, stay alert, avoid crowds and carry proper identification” at all times.
British authorities issued a similar advisory, telling her citizens in Nigeria to “consider movements carefully, follow the local news and the advice of security authorities”.
But Nigeria’s internal intelligence agency, DSS, tried to downplay rising anxieties saying the alerts were no departure from similar ones it had often issued in the past. The Service said there was nothing to worry about but added “the populace is enjoined to remain alert and assist security agencies with useful information regarding threats and suspicious criminal acts around them”.
Nigeria has several active Islamist terror groups including Boko Haram and ISWAP operating mainly in the northern part of the country but slowly creeping south.
