Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State returned to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he was once a professor of economics. He visited as a keynote speaker at a public lecture titled “Ethical Leadership, Security, and Sustainable Development.”
The event was organized by the university’s Ethics, AI, and Higher Education Strategy Team (EAISTRAP). It brought together students, scholars, traditional rulers, and academic leaders from across Nigeria.
Soludo began his career in academia and was later appointed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo as Special Adviser on Economic Affairs.
He became the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria before pursuing a political career that led to his 2021 election as governor of Anambra State.
Merit-Based Recruitment and Commitment to Quality Education
In his lecture, Soludo stressed the importance of merit in leadership and service. He shared how his administration recruited 8,115 teachers based strictly on qualifications, not state of origin.
“Teaching is beyond a job; it is a vocation with great consequence on the future of the next generation,” he said.
He explained that recruitment was open to all Nigerians and not limited to Anambra State indigenes.
“The interest of the Anambra child is to be taught by the best teacher across the world, not by the incompetent person from his village,” Soludo added.
The governor said removing bias in hiring processes promotes better outcomes for society. He used his government’s recruitment drive as an example of ethical leadership in practice.
A Sentimental Visit and a Promise to Support UNN
Beyond the lecture, Soludo’s visit was emotional. He walked through the university’s old boulevards and buildings, recalling his years as a student and lecturer. He interacted with students at the Department of Economics and residents of Eni Njoku and Alvan Ikoku Halls.
He described the experience as a homecoming filled with both joy and reflection.
Soludo promised to support the university in areas where urgent help is needed. He urged alumni around the world to contribute to improving facilities and support the current generation of students.
“Great Lions and Lionesses, remember the Den and roar to its rescue,” he said warmly.
Dignitaries Present at the Event
The event featured respected guests including the Ag. Vice Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Oguejiofor Ujam, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Ezeokonkwo. Also present were the Chairman of the occasion, HRM Igwe Sir Samuel Ikechukwu Asadu (Igwe Ogadagidi), and Prof. Casimir Ani, Chairman of EAISTRAP.
Governor Soludo’s speech was praised for his usual eloquence, clarity and practical examples of ethical governance.
