Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has called on northern politicians to apologize for failing the region over the past two decades.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Sani criticized leaders for neglecting northern Nigeria, leading to widespread poverty and underdevelopment.

Sani admitted being part of the system and said, “We all need to look at ourselves in the mirror and apologize to the people of northern Nigeria. We let them down.”

He explained that the region’s challenges stem from decades of systemic exclusion and underdevelopment.

The governor pointed out that despite massive social intervention spending under former President Muhammadu Buhari, the region grew poorer. “70% of the population in northern Nigeria—especially the masses—were completely financially excluded,” he said.

Sani also shared insights from his time as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, where he analyzed the poverty index of northern Nigeria.

Call for Ethical Leadership

The governor urged political leaders to avoid misleading citizens with dishonest claims. He expressed respect for critics who uphold ethical principles and speak truthfully.

“I’ve no problem with people criticizing the government—people like Dan Bello Galadanchi. Those individuals have the moral right to criticize this government,” he said.

The governor warned against self-serving criticism from leaders who were part of the systemic failures. “Those who were part of the rot and are now saying they’ve repented—that’s wrong,” he added.

Sani’s remarks have reignited discussions about the accountability of northern leaders and the need for honest leadership in addressing northern Nigeria’s challenges.
