Abuja May Become Host City as Nigeria Applies For Hosting 2030 Commonwealth Games

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has confirmed that Nigeria has met the deadline to express interest in bidding for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

The country’s proposed host city, Abuja, could be an opportunity to showcase its advanced development and sports culture on the global stage.

While Nigeria has signaled its intent, a formal bid cannot proceed without full government support. The country previously competed to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, but lost to Glasgow, Scotland.

A statement from NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya emphasized the significance of securing the event. “The bid presents a unique opportunity to enhance Nigeria’s global standing and invigorate its sports culture.”

Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport event, the African Games, in 2003, also held in Abuja.

Global Commonwealth Games Landscape

The next Commonwealth Games will return to Glasgow, Scotland, in March 2026 after Australia’s Victoria State withdrew as host due to rising costs.

This shift has placed increased scrutiny on bidding nations’ ability to finance and deliver the event successfully.

Should Nigeria move forward with a bid, it will face competition from other interested nations eager to host the prestigious games.

The Commonwealth of Nations consists of 56 member countries spanning Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific.

Some of the largest and most influential members include India, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and South Africa.

The last Commonwealth Games were held in Birmingham, England, from July 27 to August 7, 2022.
