Zimbabwean swimming legend Kirsty Coventry has been elected president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), making history as the first African, female and youngest-ever leader of the organization. The 41-year-old replaces Thomas Bach, who stepped down after 12 years.

Coventry won decisively in the first round, securing 49 of 97 votes. Her closest competitor, Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., received 28 votes, while World Athletics chief Sebastian Coe got only eight.

The victory was a surprise, as Samaranch Jr. and Coe were seen as strong contenders. Many believed Bach favored Coventry, but her campaign remained low-key. Still, her lobbying was so effective that one seriously ill IOC member flew in just to vote for her.

This is an extraordinary moment,” Coventry said in her acceptance speech. “As a nine-year-old girl, I never imagined I’d be here, giving back to this incredible movement.

Challenges Ahead

Coventry will lead the IOC during a complex time. The organization faces geopolitical tensions, including debates over Russia’s participation following its invasion of Ukraine. She will also have to work with U.S. President Donald Trump as Los Angeles prepares to host the 2028 Olympics.

Her role as Zimbabwe’s Sports Minister has raised some concerns. Critics argue that Zimbabwe’s 2023 elections were unfair. However, this did not affect the IOC vote. Coventry assured members she would lead with fairness and unity.

We’ve got some work ahead,” she said. “But together, we will make the Olympic movement stronger than ever.
