Paris 2024Olympics: USA Advances to Semifinals with 88-74 Victory Over D’Tigress of Nigeria

In a thrilling quarterfinal clash, 🇺🇸Team USA defeated D’Tigress of Nigeria🇳🇬 88-74 to secure a spot in the semifinals of the 🏀🏀women’s Paris 2024 Olympics basketball. Despite Nigeria’s strong comeback effort, the Americans’ dominance in the first half proved too much to overcome.

First Half Dominance

Team USA showcased their prowess early on, leading 52-33 at halftime. Led by two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart, who scored a game-high 13 points in the first half, the Americans established an early double-digit lead. Stewart was efficient, making five of her seven shots, including two of three from beyond the arc.

Nigeria, however, did not back down. Ezinne Kalu had a standout performance with 12 points on 67% shooting, helping her team reduce the deficit to four points in the second quarter. Despite their efforts, Nigeria could not contain the star-studded American lineup, which began to pull away as the first half progressed.

Nigeria’s Resilient Comeback

The second half saw the USA extend their lead to a daunting 30 points in the third quarter. Yet, Nigeria displayed remarkable resilience and an impressive fourth-quarter performance, cutting the deficit to 14 points by the final buzzer.

Promise Amukamara, Amy Okonkwo, and Ezinne Kalu were instrumental in Nigeria’s late surge, scoring 19, 17, and 16 points respectively. Their efforts, although commendable, were insufficient to overcome the Americans’ early lead.

Late Drama

The game wasn’t without its moments of drama. In the closing seconds, tensions flared when Ezinne Kalu continued to play until the final buzzer, scoring a late layup. This led to Kahleah Copper of Team USA receiving a technical foul for throwing the ball at Kalu’s leg in frustration.

Two-time MVP A’ja Wilson was a force to be reckoned with, posting a game-high 20 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks. Her dominant performance underscored the Americans’ superiority throughout the game.

What’s Ahead?

With this victory, Team USA advances to the semifinals, where they will look to continue their quest for gold. Notwithstanding the loss, Nigeria can take pride in their spirited performance and the individual brilliance displayed by their key players.

The muscular match revealed the huge competitiveness of international women’s basketball, and has set the stage for an even exciting semifinal round.
