Who is Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas?
Born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, Vice Admiral Ibas is a seasoned naval officer and diplomat. He served as the 22nd Chief of Naval Staff of the Nigerian Navy from July 2015 to January 2021 before being appointed Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ghana in 2021.
Education and Military Training
Ibas began his education at Nko Primary School before completing it at Big Qua Primary School, Calabar, in 1971. He attended Hope Waddell Training Institute (1972-1976) and later the School of Basic Studies, Ogoja (1977-1979).
His military career started at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1979 as part of the 26th Regular Course, leading to his commission as a sub-lieutenant in 1983.
Distinguished Naval Career
Throughout his career, Vice Admiral Ibas held key positions in the Nigerian Navy. He served aboard several naval vessels, including NNS Ruwan Yaro, NNS Obuma, and NNS Aradu. He also commanded the Nigerian Navy Underwater Warfare School, Forward Operating Base Ibaka, and later the Western Naval Command.
Additionally, he served in strategic roles such as Naval Provost Marshal, Chief of Administration at Naval Headquarters, and Navy Secretary. His career peaked when he was appointed Chief of Naval Staff in 2015, overseeing critical maritime security operations.
Diplomatic Service
Following his retirement from the navy, Ibas was appointed Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ghana in 2021, where he played a crucial role in strengthening regional security and diplomatic relations.
Personal Life
Vice Admiral Ibas is married to Barrister Theresa Ibas, and they have children. He enjoys reading, watching documentaries, and playing golf.
