Nigerian-born Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been re-elected unopposed as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second four-year term.

The nomination period closed on November 8, with no other candidates emerging to challenge her. Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, Chair of the General Council, confirmed Okonjo-Iweala’s sole candidacy.

Okonjo-Iweala, who made history as the first woman and African to lead the WTO in 2021, expressed her willingness to serve again in a letter on September 16. Her current term ends on August 31, 2025.

A renowned economist, Okonjo-Iweala previously served as World Bank Managing Director, Nigeria’s Finance Minister (twice), and Foreign Minister. She has also held board positions at Twitter (now X) and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).

The African Group, comprising 58 WTO member states, endorsed her re-election in July. Okonjo-Iweala’s tenure has been marked by calm relations among global trading partners, with no significant unresolved disputes.
