The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has withdrawn from the upcoming local government elections due to alleged widespread irregularities.
The party announced its withdrawal on Saturday, citing violations of due process and the compromise of the election’s integrity.
The APC argued that participating in the election would be equivalent to “legalizing illegality” because the formation of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) and the scheduling of the election did not allegedly adhere to the procedures outlined in the Electoral Act 2022.
The party’s State Chairman, Chief Basil Ejidike, criticized the ANSIEC and Governor Chukwuma Soludo for not providing sufficient time for political parties to conduct primaries or campaign adequately in line with the Electoral Act.
The APC’s legal adviser, Chukwunoso Chinweuba, confirmed that the party had filed a case at the High Court challenging the local government election’s legality. The party also commended other parties—the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party—for challenging the irregularities in court.
