Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Chinese President Xi Jinping have announced elevating Nigeria-China ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. During the Nigerian leader’s state visit to Beijing, the two leaders agreed to build a high-level Nigeria-China community with a shared future.
Nigeria, as the largest country in Africa and the largest economy with a young population, holds great potential to drive economic growth and cross-sectoral programs. Tinubu told his host that elevating Nigeria-China ties to a “comprehensive development partnership” should result in “robust development, stability, and security in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.”
Tinubu also spoke on his administration’s economic reforms, assuring Xi Jinping that “we have recognized the need to reform our economy, and we are doing so diligently across tax and tariff reviews and various other segments of our nation’s economy.”
“Trading and investment partners will have easy access to bring in their investments and seamlessly take their resources out,” the President stated.
President Xi, on his part, noted the mutual solid understanding between Nigeria and the Peoples Republic of China since establishing diplomatic ties over the past 50 years. He emphasized the importance of strengthening strategic coordination and promoting expected progress among Global South countries.

President Xi pledged that China and Nigeria would continue to work closely within the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) framework as a model of cooperation between nations, reaffirming the commitment of both leaders to the partnership.
