Uruguay, Club Nacional de Football defender, Juan Izquierdo, has died after collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match with an irregular heartbeat.
The 27-year-old Uruguayan suffered a cardiac arrest during the match against Sao Paulo on 22 August. Initially described as stable, his condition worsened in recent days.
Nacional expressed condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones. “It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that the Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo,” his Uruguayan side posted on X.
A Brazilian side Sao Paulo spokesperson called the news a “sad day for football.“
Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez expressed sadness and wished for strength for his family and friends.
Izquierdo was put on a ventilator and had been under neurological care since Monday. During the match with Sao Paulo, he was a half-time substitute for former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates.
Uruguay’s first and second-division leagues were postponed the weekend following Izquierdro’s collapse. Izquierdo’s wife gave birth to their second child only ten days ago.
