The Federal Government has declared tomorrow, Wednesday, June 12 as a public holiday.
In his statement on behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, congratulated Nigerians for achieving 25 years of unbroken democracy.
A statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary and made public on Tuesday by the minister read as follows: “As we commemorate another day of democracy in our beloved nation’s history, let us all consider the sacrifices made by our forefathers and ensure that Nigeria stays a unified, safe, peaceful, and indivisible entity.“
He pleaded with Nigerians to hold faithful to the principles of democratic government.
The Minister also called on Nigerians and friends to appreciate the progress that has been made and look forward to a better future for Nigeria’s democracy.
June 12 was inaugurated as Nigeria’s Democracy Day and national holiday by former President Muhammadu Buhari. It commemorates an election on June 12, 1993, that was adjudged the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. It was conducted by the then National Election Commission, chaired by eminent Prof. Humphrey Nwosu.
Alhaji Moshood Abiola presumably won the election, but it was later annulled by his friend and then Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim. Babangida.
