Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ADV) – Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the head of the Dakar-based United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) is on a tough mission to Nigeria ahead of the upcoming presidential elections, sources said.
The career diplomat is on a visit to support the consolidation of democracy and good governance in Nigeria, and in line with the commitment of the United Nations Secretary-General to prevent conflicts.
The former Ghanaian minister of foreign affairs and incumbent Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary-General will among other things, seek to appease the already tensed situation ahead next month’s presidential ballot.
While in Nigeria, Dr. Chambas will participate in a national confidence-building conference with major stakeholders including the United Nations country team in Nigeria and in close collaboration with the National Committee for Peace (NPC), the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).
Officials of the National Human Rights Commission will participate in national confidence-building meeting.
A statement by the UNOWAS on Thursday said during his mission, Mr. Ibn Chambas will also meet with Nigerian stakeholders to ensure that the entities involved in the organization of the elections take the necessary measures to achieve a positive, non-violent, inclusive, credible and transparent outcome of the poll.
All in all, 91 political parties have already registered for Nigeria’s presidential poll billed for next month and to which incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is running for a second mandate.
