Datti Baba-Ahmed, former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would have won the 2027 presidency if he had supported Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential poll.
Baba-Ahmed made this statement during an interview on ‘Inside Sources’ on Channels Television.
He said if Atiku had been patient and acted like President Bola Tinubu, who offered others the political platform to contest presidential elections, he would have agreed to step down in 2027 and urged Obi to do the same.
Baba-Ahmed explained his reasoning clearly.
“If in 2023 elections, he took everyone by surprise, did the kind of things Tinubu would typically do, called Obi and I and said, ‘Hey, guys, you are my juniors, I’ll support you guys. No 2027 for you,’ Wallahi, I would have agreed, and I would have told Obi to agree, and Atiku would have been the 2027 president of Nigeria.”
“But once they enter that trance, they tend to see themselves as President,” he said.
The former LP vice-presidential candidate believes Atiku’s approach in 2023 missed a critical opportunity to secure 2027 through early alliance-building.
Nobody Can Come Between Me and My Boss, Peter Obi
Furthermore, Baba-Ahmed, dismissed speculation of a rift between himself and his former principal, Obi.
He said he still respects Obi despite their movement into different political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said, “Let me say that nobody will cause a problem between me and my boss, Peter Obi.
“He can be at any party today. I still have respect for him as someone who governed Anambra State, as someone who doesn’t give the ‘shi-shi’, and we have mutual respect for each other, so nobody will come between us.”
Baba-Ahmed was Obi’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party.
However, ahead of the 2027 elections, the two politicians moved to different political parties.
Baba-Ahmed joined the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), while Obi defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where he has emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.
