The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays for this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The announcement came on Monday from the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
The government said the holiday reflects the spiritual weight of Eid-ul-Adha for Muslims in Nigeria and across the world.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful at home and abroad, describing the festival as a time for sacrifice, obedience and compassion.
“The Federal Government urges all Nigerians to use this period for prayer and sober reflection, asking for divine guidance upon the country as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for every citizen,” the statement read.
He also called for unity, peaceful coexistence and brotherhood during the celebration.
Muslims across the country were wished a peaceful and fulfilling Eid-ul-Adha.
Kano Adds Worker Support
In Kano, Governor Abba Yusuf has approved a ₦20,000 Eid-el-Kabir goodwill package for civil servants.
The package covers workers in the state civil service and across the 44 local government areas, according to a statement issued on Tuesday in Kano by Musa Tanko-Muhammad, Press Secretary to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.
The support applies to civil servants on Grade Levels 01 to 14 in ministries, departments, agencies and local government councils.
Officials said the package comes after the payment of May salaries to state and local government workers.
Governor Yusuf said the support reflects his administration’s concern for workers’ welfare and the pressure many households face during festive periods.
He described civil servants as the backbone of public service in Kano State and said the timing was meant to help families celebrate with more comfort.
The governor also linked the support to current economic realities and said his administration remains committed to worker-friendly policies.
He added that the initiative is intended to support productivity and keep public service running smoothly.
Yusuf sent Eid greetings to workers and residents, while praying for peace, unity and prosperity in Kano and across Nigeria.
