Atiku Wins ADC Gombe Primary With 139,334 Votes

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has won the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election in Gombe State.

He polled 139,334 votes to defeat former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the exercise held across the state’s 11 local government areas.

The result was announced on Monday evening by the state Returning Officer, Prof. David Agbu. He said the poll was peaceful and well coordinated from start to finish.

Atiku’s win adds fresh weight to his bid for the ADC ticket ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The former Vice-President had earlier voted in Adamawa State, where he described the process as democracy at work.

Meanwhile, the Gombe result showed a wide gap between the leading candidate and his rivals. Amaechi came second with 1,150 votes, while Hayatu-Deen scored 465 votes.

The Returning Officer said 140,949 registered party members voted in the primary out of 160,982 registered ADC members in Gombe State.

Peaceful Exercise Across Gombe

Agbu announced the result in the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security personnel and party stakeholders.

Those present included Senator Idris Abdullahi Umar, a former Minister of Transportation and the ADC’s senatorial candidate for Gombe Central, alongside other senatorial candidates and party executives.

Agbu said the process was handled peacefully and thanked members for their patience while results were collated from the 11 LGAs.

He also said any aspirant who was unhappy with the outcome could file an appeal through the party’s internal channels.

The Gombe chapter of the ADC had earlier named Atiku as its sole candidate before the primary. That position helped shape the contest and made his victory in the state look likely.

The Gombe outcome comes as the ADC continues its presidential primary process nationwide. For Atiku, it signals strong support in one state as he seeks another shot at the presidency.

Party members in Gombe said the peaceful conduct of the exercise showed growing mobilisation within the ADC ahead of the 2027 general election.

The result also places pressure on rival blocs within the party as the race for the national ticket gathers pace.
