Enugu PDP Collapses as Gov Mbah Set to Lead Mass Defection to APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State is on the verge of collapse as Governor Peter Mbah prepares to lead a sweeping defection into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

APC leaders in the state confirmed that the governor will officially join the ruling party on Tuesday, October 14, 2024 — taking along the entire PDP structure in Enugu.

Dr. Ben Nwoye, the state APC caretaker chairman, made the revelation during the inauguration of the new Enugu APC caretaker committee in Abuja on Friday.

“Political evangelism has started. We went to the governor, and he has agreed to move with us into APC. He is not coming alone, he is coming with the whole structure of Enugu PDP,” Nwoye said to loud applause.

The Fall of PDP’s 25-Year Grip

Party insiders describe the move as the “death knell” of the PDP in Enugu, ending the party’s uninterrupted 25-year control of state politics.

The defection will see Governor Mbah joined by all 260 ward councillors, 24 members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, National Assembly members, and the entire PDP State Executive Committee.

Observers say the political realignment will reshape power in the Southeast — the most significant since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

APC’s National Leaders Welcome Enugu Bloc

APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who inaugurated the new caretaker committee, urged the members to consolidate the defection into a sustainable political victory.

“APC is home for all. The person who came yesterday, today, or tomorrow has equal rights. Our goal is simple: to expand, to win, and to deliver overwhelming victory in 2027,” Yilwatda said.

Deputy National Chairman (South), Emma Eneukwu, said the development signals a new dawn for the Southeast within Nigeria’s ruling coalition.

“We will no longer play second fiddle. With Enugu in APC, the Southeast has found its voice again,” he declared.

Political Shockwaves Across the Southeast

Party leaders believe the defection will cripple PDP’s influence in the region, spark similar movements in Anambra and Abia, and strengthen APC’s position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Nwoye said the region is witnessing a rebirth of political direction under Mbah’s leadership.

“Where Enugu goes, the Southeast goes. Never again will opposition dominate our region. Governor Mbah has transformed Enugu in two years. Now he will anchor APC’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the Southeast,” he said.

As Enugu’s political tide shifts, one question lingers — can Mbah’s move redefine South East politics or worsen the disunity within its ranks?
