The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) says it has now enrolled more than 7.6 million employees into the Employees Compensation Scheme.
It also says the Nigeria Police Force has now been brought into the scheme for the first time.
Managing Director Oluwaseun Faleye disclosed this at the 2026 International Civil Service Conference in Abuja.
The conference theme was Reforms, Resilience and Results.
Faleye said the police enrolment followed talks with the Inspector-General of Police.
He described it as a major step for worker protection, especially for officers facing danger in the line of duty.
“We have enrolled over 7.6 million employees into the Scheme. We secured the enrolment of the Nigeria Police Force into the ECS — a historic first — after engagements with the Inspector-General of Police,” he said.
He added that the decision should improve morale because officers now know their families have some protection if injury or death occurs while serving.
Faleye said the fund wants no worker or family to suffer delay when compensation is due.
“Our goal is simple: no Nigerian worker or their family should have to endure unnecessary delays when they are entitled to compensation under the law,” he said.
Claims, Reforms And Payouts
Faleye said he inherited an agency facing slow claims processing, weak awareness and poor trust when he took office on July 15, 2024.
He said the response has been digital reform, wider coverage and stronger transparency.
The NSITF also partnered with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and named 120 staff as anti-corruption liaison officers nationwide.
Faleye said the fund is replacing paper-based systems with digital platforms to speed up claims and improve tracking.
He also said the agency processed 22,350 claims in 2024 and recorded a 21% rise in compensation payments.
Among the payouts he listed were ₦90 million to a Seplat Energy worker, ₦76 million to dependants of a Nigerian Breweries employee, ₦31 million in medical bills for a Nestlé worker, and ₦42.5 million to the family of a deceased Depthwize employee.
“These are not just numbers — these are families who received justice, dignity and support in their most difficult moments,” he said.
Faleye also said the fund signed a partnership with the Lagos State Government in April 2026 to extend the scheme to state workers.
He added that NSITF is pushing for ECS compliance certificates to become part of public procurement rules, so contractors protect workers before getting government jobs.
