President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said some powerful interests affected by his economic reforms want him dead.
He linked the hostility to his decision to remove fuel subsidy and unify exchange rates.
The President made the comment through former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba at the launch of The NADECO Story in Lagos.
Osoba represented Tinubu at the book launch and awards ceremony for pro-democracy actors.
The event focused on the role of the National Democratic Coalition in the struggle for democracy between 1994 and 1998.
Tinubu said people who benefited from multiple exchange rates and subsidy payments are unhappy with the changes.
According to Osoba, the President said those involved in “round-tripping” would “wish him dead at any time”.
He said Tinubu remains committed to changing the economy despite the pressure.
Economic And Political Context
Tinubu also said the gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates has narrowed.
He said the naira has stabilised around ₦1,380 to the dollar.
He added that he would avoid policies that could cause a sudden currency jump and disturb current market positions.
The President also said economy and security are the two immediate priorities of his government.
He warned that insecurity is spreading into the South-West.
Tinubu praised NADECO members for their role in Nigeria’s return to civilian rule.
He said their sacrifices helped shape the country’s democracy and added that he would not have become President without their support.
He also promised to perform better if given a second term, although the president has one more year in office to prove his mettle and silence his critics with optimal performance.
The event had personalities like Wole Soyinka, Olisa Agbakoba, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rasheed Ladoja in attendance.
