UNESCO Ranks Nigeria as the Third Largest Student Export Nation

Nigeria has been ranked as the third-largest source of international students worldwide, according to a new report by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The findings were published in UNESCO’s first Higher Education Global Trends Report released on Tuesday. It showed that Nigeria accounted for 5% of all students studying outside their home countries in 2023.

This places Nigeria alongside Germany in third position globally, behind China and India, which dominate international student mobility.

China accounted for 37%, while India followed with 29%, reflecting a strong concentration of global student migration among a few countries.

UNESCO described “outbound student mobility” as students leaving their home countries to pursue higher education abroad.

The report said nearly half of all internationally mobile students come from just 10 countries, including Nigeria, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, the United States, France, Pakistan, and Nepal.

Rising Global Demand for Foreign Education

The report showed that international student numbers have grown sharply over two decades, rising from 2.5 million in 2002 to 7.3 million in 2023.

UNESCO projects the figure could reach 9 million by 2030, driven by increasing demand for global education opportunities.

However, it also warned that access remains limited. Fewer than 3% of all higher education students globally study abroad.

“Despite growth expectations, the proportion of higher education students benefiting from academic mobility remains low, just under 3%, underscoring the elitist nature of mobility…”

The organisation said economic conditions, visa restrictions, scholarship access, and quality gaps in local universities continue to push students abroad.

It also revealed that 35% of countries now operate policies designed to encourage outbound education, reflecting a growing global education migration trend.
