The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has secured its spot as one of Africa’s premier institutions after being ranked third in Nigeria in the 2026 SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR).
Released in March 2026, the latest SIR data shows that UNN follows only the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos on the national stage. Globally, the university attained a ranking of 5,831.
This prestigious academic and research-related ranking evaluates institutions based on three key pillars: research performance at 50%, innovation outputs at 30%, and societal impact at 20%.
The methodology uses data from internationally recognised databases. These include Scopus, Google, and PATSTAT. This ensures a comprehensive look at how universities influence the global scientific community.
UNN’s achievement is being celebrated as a sign of the university’s renewed drive toward excellence and global relevance. This success comes just months after Professor Simon Ortuanya took office.
Professor Ortuanya, a distinguished academic administrator, assumed the role of Vice-Chancellor in August 2025. Many stakeholders believe his leadership helped the institution hit the ground running.
