The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has confirmed that over 3,000 delegates will attend its national convention scheduled for April 14 in Abuja, despite challenges in securing preferred venues.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bola Abdullahi, told newsmen that federal government officials frustrated efforts to use Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome.
“We submitted letters requesting the use of Eagle Square. They have not responded to our letter till this moment. They simply ignore us,” he said.
Abdullahi explained that the party eventually settled on the Rainbow Hotel in Abuja.
“The number of delegates expected for the national convention is more than 3,000. So, we are expecting over 3,000 delegates for the ADC national convention,” he added.
He described the government’s actions as “part of the assault on opposition leaders and their political parties.”
He questioned why Eagle Square appeared to have become exclusive to the ruling APC.
“Parties across generations have used Eagle Square. How come it is during President Bola Tinubu that Eagle Square becomes a property of the ruling party, APC?”
Despite the situation, Abdullahi insisted: “Our party leaders, supporters, and members at large shall gather for a free, fair, and credible national convention. The convention will be held at the Rainbow Hotel, Abuja, on April 14.”
Leadership Crisis And Updated Committees
The ADC has been challenged with a sudden leadership crisis since early this year, following disputes over the tenure of former chairman Ralph Nwosu and the emergence of a new National Working Committee led by former Senate President David Mark.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently removed Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola from its records, sparking further controversy.
At a press conference on April 2, Mark accused INEC of contempt of court and demanded the resignation of its chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan.
Meanwhile, Abdullahi announced that the inauguration of newly elected state executives will take place on May 12, 2026, or at a later date.
He congratulated officials on peaceful congresses, saying: “These elections reflect the ADC’s enduring commitment to internal democracy, transparency, and the rule of law.”
The party also released updated lists of convention committees, with former Cross River State governor Liyel Imoke named chairman and former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal as deputy.
The ADC’s internal divisions and legal battles still raise questions about its readiness for the 2027 elections, even as it pushes ahead with preparations for the April convention.
