Yusuf Buhari, son of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has formally announced his intention to contest for a seat in Nigeria’s House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The declaration was confirmed late Monday by Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to Buhari, who disclosed that Yusuf had already informed key political stakeholders of his ambition.
In a letter dated April 3, Yusuf revealed he would seek to represent the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua federal constituency in Katsina State under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“With all respect, I am extremely delighted to write and inform you of my intention to contest for the seat of House of Representatives at the above-mentioned constituency under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC),” the letter read.
“After wide consultations, I wish to contest for the seat of the House of Representatives, Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua, as my contribution to ensure a good and qualitative leadership,” he added.
Political Legacy and Grassroots Development
Yusuf Buhari, who is the eldest son of Nigeria’s former leader, is positioning his candidacy as a continuation of his father’s political legacy in Katsina State.
“Your support will help my ambition to succeed, to bring infrastructural development as well as human support and development to the people of this constituency,” Yusuf wrote.
The Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua constituency holds symbolic weight, as Daura is the hometown of Muhammadu Buhari. This makes Yusuf’s bid particularly significant within APC’s northern stronghold.
Ahmad corroborated the announcement in a post on his X handle, stating: “Following wide consultations, Yusuf Buhari, the son of our late boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, has informed stakeholders of his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua constituency under the All Progressives Congress.”
APC Dynamics Ahead Of 2027
The APC, Nigeria’s ruling party, has long maintained dominance in Katsina State. Yusuf’s entry into the race adds another layer to the party’s internal dynamics ahead of the 2027 polls.
His candidacy is expected to attract attention due to his family’s political influence and the symbolic weight of Daura. However, the final outcome will depend on party primaries and voter sentiment.
According to Premium Times, Yusuf’s letter has already circulated among local leaders, sparking discussions about generational leadership and continuity within the APC.
“While expecting your full support and encouragement, I wish you all the very best in all your undertakings,” Yusuf concluded in his letter.
As Nigeria prepares for another pivotal election cycle, Yusuf Buhari’s declaration signals the beginning of what could be a closely watched contest in Katsina State.
