The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has filed a lawsuit against the Code of Conduct Bureau.
The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenges the bureau’s alleged failure to investigate lawmakers.
It centres on claims that key provisions were altered during amendments to the Electoral Act and tax reform laws.
The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/634/2026, seeks a court order compelling a formal probe into the allegations.
SERAP said the action followed concerns about abuse of office during legislative processes.
SERAP Alleges Tampering With Electoral Act
In its filing, SERAP accused some lawmakers of removing critical provisions without due process.
“An order of mandamus directing the CCB to investigate allegations… is required.”
“Certain lawmakers improperly removed key provisions on electronic transmission of election results.”
The group also pointed to alleged discrepancies in tax reform bills.
“Some lawmakers and executive officials unlawfully altered aspects of the tax reform bills.”
“This resulted in differences between versions passed and those later gazetted.”
SERAP asked the court to ensure that any violations are prosecuted.
“Direct the CCB to refer established breaches to the Code of Conduct Tribunal.”
Group Warns Of Abuse Of Office Risks
SERAP argued that unchecked actions during lawmaking could weaken democratic accountability.
“Granting the reliefs sought would address concerns relating to conflict of interest.”
“It would strengthen compliance with due process.”
The organisation said public office carries strict ethical obligations.
“Public officers hold their offices in trust for the people.”
“They must not deploy official power for personal or sectional advantage.”
The case also references constitutional duties placed on institutions to fight corruption and uphold transparency.
According to Premium Times, the allegations include removal of electronic transmission provisions during plenary.
They also include inconsistencies between tax bills approved by lawmakers and later official versions.
No hearing date has been fixed, leaving the dispute pending before the court.
