The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has directed members to begin a nationwide strike.
The action starts at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, following a National Executive Council meeting.
The directive was confirmed in a statement signed by General Secretary Shuaibu Ibrahim.
The strike follows a dispute with the Federal Government over the revised Professional Allowance Table.
NARD said the government plans to halt the allowance framework agreed after the 2025 strike.
“This is a development deemed unfortunate.”
“Reversal of the decision to cease the implementation of the PAT is required.”
The association also listed unpaid arrears as a key issue.
“Immediate payment of promotion arrears and salary arrears for specific centres.”
“Prompt conclusion of the process of paying the 2026 MTRF.”
Doctors further demanded settlement of long-standing debts.
“Immediate processing and payment of outstanding 19 months’ arrears.”
Health Services Face Disruption Nationwide
The strike is expected to disrupt services across public hospitals nationwide.
Emergency care and routine services may be affected as resident doctors form the backbone of hospital operations.
Meanwhile, NARD leadership called for unity among members during the action.
“We call on members to unite in the fight against this injustice.”
“We will pursue this to a logical conclusion.”
